How to Overcome the 3 Biggest Quirks on Facebook
Conquering Facebook challenges
If you're like millions of other online browsers, you've probably joined (or have at least thought about joining) the social networking website Facebook. With membership, however, comes a few quirks. Here's how to best overcome these blips and fully enjoy what some users liken to a funtastic online reunion.
Go toe to toe and face to face with Facebook
As with any online networking site, Facebook comes with challenges. Read on to learn how to finesse the site to your best advantage.
No. 1: From flat to fun
If you are familiar with other networking sites like MySpace, you know that their pages can be crammed with information. Facebook, on the other hand, leaves a lot to the imagination. User pages aren't personalized with fun backgrounds and pictures and much of the page is left, well, blank.
Take some control of your Facebook profile page and jazz up the content. Add a few applications (like a slideshow or a game) to add some spice to your page. These will break up the monotony and let you showcase a profile that stands apart from the crowd.
No. 2: Where's Waldo? (and everyone else you know)
You might join Facebook to connect with old friends. If so, Facebook automatically searches for all friends in your email address book. However, if you want to search for your old college pal Becky, who now lives in Montana, Facebook is stumped.
The search options aren't advanced enough to help you. Even if you manage to find Becky in Montana, you have to be a member of the Montana network before you can contact her.
Try browsing through old email accounts for email addresses of old friends (like Becky) and let Facebook search that way. The site is much more friend-friendly when you have email addresses. Otherwise, you're stuck joining networks like "Montana" and searching for friends on your own.
No. 3: Too many options
A definite selling point of Facebook is the capability to add applications that will do almost everything you'd like. While playing Scrabble with friends, you can post slideshows, send Good Karma and more. But there is a limitation.
Say you're looking for a fun game to play with friends. When you search for them in the applications window, your search leaves you with over 500 options. With no way to narrow them down, you're stuck sifting through each one.
Your best option is to get specific. Do you want a word game? If so, then type those exact words into the search bar to best limit your search results. "Word game" brings up just 24 applications.
Clearly, Facebook has some shortcomings. But in the end, a little online elbow grease pays off as you have fun and connect with old (and new) friends.
