Skitch: Photo Sharing Software of the Future or More White Noise?
What's a Skitch -- and why should you care?
If you own a Mac, you're probably familiar with Plasq, the company responsible for the new Skitch beta software.
Plasq produces tons of fun products, including free screensavers (called sqreensavers), games and the always-popular Comic Life, award-winning software that expands what you can do with your photos.
In their newest venture, Plasq hopes to revolutionize how we use cameras in the digital age. But what exactly is Skitch, who can use it and what does it do?
What is Skitch?
Originally, Skitch was a screenshot program, and that's still its main function. Don't be fooled, though -- Skitch does a lot more than just provide a quick and easy way to snap and share screenshots. Just a few of Skitch's features include:
1. Basic image editing software
2. Quick, easy ways to share images online
3. Quick screenshot grabs, edits and file transfers
And a host of other options. Like most Plasq products, Skitch is quite simply a fun and unique way to share images.
Who Can Use It?
PC users, take heart: you can now download the beta version of Skitch for Windows. Like all Plasq programs, Skitch is designed for a Mac. But Windows users seem satisfied that the product reaches its full potential for them, too.
In terms of usability, Skitch is a very user-friendly product. Under help, you can find a quick video (also available online) that runs through a few of the program's basic features. One nice feature defines each function as you slide over it, allowing most people to master Skitch quickly.
A small caveat: you'll have to dig through the help system to master some fairly basic functions (such as cropping and resizing) since they aren't evident from the screen and tools themselves.
What Does It Do?
Skitch isn't iPhoto or PhotoShop. It's a program that offers a fast, easy and fun way to share photos (screenshots and otherwise). Unlike iPhoto, it lets you add words or drawings to photos while you edit. But you'll have to go elsewhere for more sophisticated editing.
With all of this in mind, it's well worth taking a look at Plasq's latest program and getting your free Beta version of Skitch today.
