How to get the most out of Flickr
Flickr lets you share your photos with ease
There's more to Flickr than uploading your photos and sorting them to your liking. You can do a number of things to make your visitors' experience fun, entertaining and educational. Look around your Flickr account and you'll soon see how exciting this can be.
Within your sets, you can add descriptions and live links to your photos. You can tag your images to help people find them. And you can share individual sets by sending an email to your contact list from within your account. That's just the beginning of what you can do in Flickr.
Add captions and headings to images
Sometimes it's just not enough to have a photo online. With Flickr, you can add descriptions that explain the photo. A photo of an historical event will be easier for your visitors to understand if you include the particular event and the people in the shot.
Tags enable people to find specific images by keywords. If they search Flickr for travel photos and you have photos tagged with that keyword, those images will be included in their search results.
One great feature is your ability to add restrictions to all your images so that only certain people can view them. You can specify which photos are for family viewing and which are for friends to see. You can also set them for public or private viewing.
Sort by topic
Create topic-relevant sets to keep related images together. When someone wants to view your travel photos, they might find a set on historic sites, one on your Florida vacation and one on coastal cruises.
Add your photos to maps
If you have a great photo of Mount Hood in Washington State, you can add it to online maps automatically through Flickr.
When you click "Maps" on your main menu, you'll be taken to a map. Your pictures will appear along the bottom. You simply zoom into the location where you took the photo and drag your photo to that location on the map.
Find groups to join
Click the "Groups" link on the top menu in your account and you will be able to search the different groups for one that suits your interests. You can find them by keyword and you can create your own group and invite others to join. This is a great way to create your own online community or join an existing one.
Groups provide many opportunities to swap photography stories, share your photographs and develop casual online relationships with people who most likely have similar experiences to share.
The Flickr group members are at varying levels of expertise. You're sure to find someone who can help you to improve your photography or solve a problem.
Add Flickr to your blog
It's easy to get your favorite photos to appear on your blog. You simply create a set of photos and insert the Flickr code to your blog. Your photos will automatically appear in whatever format you chose, whether it's static strips or film strips.
There's so much fun to be had uploading, sorting, sharing and exchanging your images with others. You can even order prints and have a photo imprinted on a mug as a gift. Flickr makes it all simple and convenient, especially if you're just learning about photo sharing.
